Description

New York Beauties blocks are beautiful and seem very intricate and difficult to piece, when in truth they are quite simple once you learn a few tips and tricks. In this class, you will learn a technique to ensure that these blocks are all the same size and perfectly square. The class will cover paper piecing and impartial seems. Free-motion quilting will be demonstrated, as well as pillow construction. Students will work on a 20′′ pillow top.

What Does the Student Bring to Class?

Fabric:

8 Fat Quarters (FQs) of coordinating fabric .25 m of two colors for the paper pieced arcs to match / contrast FQs A scrap of fabric at least 4” x 4” to contrast FQs for center square 1 – 24” x 24” square of batting of choice 1 – 24” x 24” square of backing fabric of choice * 2 – 15” x 22” rectangles of fabric for the back of the pillow 2 – 17” x 24” rectangles of batting of choice 2 – 17” x 24” rectangles of backing fabric of choice * .1 m of fabric for binding

* NOTE: This fabric won’t be seen once the pillow is sewn together

Thread:

Piecing thread of your choice Quilting thread in colours to match or contrast the fabrics chosen Bobbin thread in colours of choice

If you are changing threads to quilt, consider changing the bobbin thread to match to avoid issues with tension

Other Supplies:

Large sheet of Template plastic – 11” x 17” Fine permanent marker Paper scissors Fabric scissors

Rotary cutter Mat Square ruler – 9 .” x 9 .” (at least – can be larger) 1” x 6” ruler or “add-a-quarter” ruler (if available – do not purchase) 6” x 12” ruler or similar Thread snips Pins Clear adhesive tape such as Scotch tape Pen and paper for note taking 20” pillow form ***

Sewing Machine supplies needed:

Sewing machine in perfect working order If your sewing machine has not been serviced in a long time, consider having it cleaned before the class

1/4" foot Free-motion quilting foot ** Extra bobbins Extra needles

Please bring an extra needle for piecing and quilting

Use an old needle for the foundation paper piecing Manual for your sewing machine – optional (to troubleshoot if needed)

Open to FFAA members only. Either with an individual membership or through a member Guild

Maximum Students = 20 Registration Fee is $90 per student

Please note there are no refunds. If you find you cannot attend, the onus is on you to find your replacement. A wait list can be found on FaceBook, "FFAA Wait List". Students can communicate with those wanting to take your place and exchange the registration fee.
