About the event

Heather Strachan will be providing an in-person workshop to FFAA members teaching the history and the art of Kawandi stitching. This class is for the beginner to intermediate stitcher and will provide an introduction to the meditative stitching technique and modern-day applications such as a Kawandi style scarf.

Kawandi stitching is part of the Slow Stitching Movement, a new term for an age-old practice of quiet gentle making, mending, repair and stitching. Slow stitching is about using the needle and thread the same way you would use a paintbrush. It is about creating art. It is about enjoying the process rather than worrying about the product. Basically, slow stitching is about taking a step back from the busy chaotic world we live in.

Kawandi is a hand stitching technique from the African-Siddi people of India. It is a quilt as you go method of stitching, folding fabric edges and stitching…
